So what should you think about when buying your new zebra rug? Here is some helpful information for you.

Size
An average size Zebra is approximately 8 feet from nose to end of back leg and approx. 5 1/2 feet at widest point. The smallest mature Zebra is approx. 7 feet long, and the largest approx. 9 feet.

Color
Zebra vary greatly in color, the dark stripe ranges from a very dark brown, (that from a distance looks black), to more of a soft chocolate brown, which is very popular! You can specify your color preference when you place your order to best suit the décor where the rug will be placed and we will try to match your request. If you choose to use the felt backing, we will use a black felt backing or a brown felt backing to match the color of zebra stripes you choose .

The background colors of these rugs vary from a white to a cream or beige. If you have a preference about the background color please specify what your preference is in the comments section on the order form. This allows us to try to match the hide more closely to what you want.

Felt Backing
We offer a thick felt backing that covers the entire underside of the Zebra, with a border of approximately one inch remaining visible. We use a black felt on the rugs that resemble a black stripe, and a chocolate brown felt on the Zebra in the brown tones. The major benefit of the backing is that it helps to keep the rug "lying flat". Without a backing you may experience that the ends of the rug may tend to "curl up" on the edges.
Hides with the felt backing will take an additional week, or so, as the backing is meticulously sewn onto the hide when the order is received.

Grading
Zebra rugs, as do other animal skin products, vary in the amount of "flaws" or "imperfections" found on the rug. The African Zebra (Burchell's Zebra) run in herds on the plains of Africa where many predators often only survive by tracking and consuming these wild zebras. Many of these zebras only survive by outrunning or barely escaping these predators. As a result many zebras end up with scaring from close calls with predators, not to mention thorns, cacti, and a host of other things that stick, cut and create blemishes on their hides. This is how and why we grade our Zebra Skin Rugs the way we do.
